Stylistic Analyses of John Keats’s “To Autumn”

03 Февраля 2013, реферат

Summarizing the analysis of stylistic features in the ode “To Autumn” by John Keats it becomes clear that different types of stylistic devices are of primary importance. In his ode Keats uses mainly imageries, metaphors, epithets, similes and onomatopoeias. With the help of stylistic analysis it becomes obvious that Keats doesn’t use metonymies. It also becomes evident that among all stylistic devices it is imagery that Keats uses most often. The very use of this stylistic device makes his odes so vivid and alive. Imageries make the reader feel the nature and penetrate into its particles.

Within the language as a system there establish themselves certain [definite types of relations between words, word-combinations, sentences and also between larger spans of utterances. The branch of language science, which studies the types of relations between the units enumerated, is called syntax.
In the domain of syntax, as has been justly pointed out by L. A. Bulakhovsky, it is difficult to distinguish between what is purely grammatical, i. e. marked as corresponding to the established norms, and what is stylistic, i. e. showing some kind of vacillation of these norms. This is particularly evident when we begin to analyse larger than the sentence units.

Teaching Sentence Stress

21 Ноября 2012, реферат

“Sentence Stress” need not be referred to as the particular anxiety an ESL student experiences when attempting to pronounce a particularly wordy sentence in English… Sentence Stress is actually the “music” of English, the thing that gives the language its particular “beat” or “rhythm”. In general, in any given English utterance there will be particular words that carry more “weight” or “volume” (stress) than others. From a speaking perspective, Sentence Stress will affect the degree to which an ESL student sounds “natural”. In terms of listening, it affects how well a student can understand the utterances they hear.

In this course paper we shall treat some problems of accentual structure. . According to D.Crystal the terms "heaviness, sound pressure, force, power, strength, intensity, amplitude, prominence, emphasis, accent, stress" tend to be used synonymously by most writers. According to G.P. Torsuev the notions “stressed” and “prominent” should not be used synonymically. The advantages and disadvantages of Protectionism

12 Сентября 2013, курсовая работа

Between protectionists and advocates of free trade is a long-standing controversy. Mercantilists, who first applied to the analysis of foreign trade and saw it as a source of wealth of the state, were, however, opponents of protectionism – a system of measures to stimulate the national economy and its protection from foreign competition. First economists who favored free trade, became a French physiocrats. They denied any productive role of trade in the increasing wealth of the nation. English classics were the most consistent defenders of economic liberalism in general and international trade in particular. They not only developed a coherent theory of foreign trade, but also offered a specific policy in this area. In the XX century as a result of war and economic crises, occurred a significant strengthening of protectionist ideology and practice, and now it is one of the important elements of international economic relations.

The Analysis of Shawshank Redemption

16 Апреля 2012, реферат

While there often appears to be just a story line in a movie, many different techniques are used to give a deeper meaning to the scenario. This is evident in the movie, The Shawshank Redemption. The story begins when Andy Dufresne, a young vice president of a prestigious Portland, Maine bank, is wrongfully convicted of killing his wife and her lover. He is then sent to jail where he learns lessons about life through his friends and becomes part of a corrupt scheme to launder money. After nineteen years Andy tunnels out of the prison into freedom. While it appears simple on the surface, through the use of many techniques such as title, colors, symmetry, names, numbers, symbols, irony, bible references, and others, The Shawshank Redemption gains a deeper meaning.

The British Isles lie at the juncture of several regions with past episodes of tectonic mountain building. Theseorogenic belts form a complex geology which records a huge and varied span of earth history. Of particular note was the Caledonian Orogeny during the Ordovician Period, c. 488–444 Ma and early Silurian period, when thecraton Baltica collided with the terrane Avalonia to form the mountains and hills in northern Britain and Ireland. Baltica formed roughly the north western half of Ireland and Scotland. Further collisions caused the Vatican in the Devonian and Carboniferous periods, forming the hills of Munster, south-west England, and south Wales. Over the last 500 million years the land which forms the islands has drifted northwest from around 30°S, crossing the equator around 370 million years ago to reach its present northern latitude.

The french influence on the english vocabulary in middle english

24 Мая 2011, реферат

The French influence on the English vocabulary had its greatest expansion in the period of the Middle English (1150 – 1500). During this time over 10,000 French words were adapted into the English language and about 75 per cent of these are still in use. The reasons for that are, firstly, the bilingualism in England which had been prevailing since the Norman Conquest in 1066. Secondly, the English culture was regarded as inferior, i.e. it had more to gain from the language spoken by the upper classes.1
