Many various lines of approach have been used, and yet the boundaries of the set, its classifications and the place of phraseology in the vocabulary appear controversial issues of present day linguistics.
The English and the Americans can be proud of a very rich set of dictionaries of word groups and idiomatic phrases. Their object is chiefly practical: colloquial phrases are considered an important characteristic feature of natural spoken English and stumbling block for foreigners.
Bradford has thrown 48 touchdown passes this season; Tebow, who is a strong runner as well a passer, has 28. Bradford has thrown six interceptions and Tebow has tossed two. Both are in the top five in passing efficiency.
The primary difference between Bradford and Tebow is that Bradford did his damage in the defensively challenged Big 12. The best defense in the conference is Texas at No. 50. Bradford faced two defenses ranked in the top 25 — Texas Christian and Cincinnati; Tebow faced eight ranked in the top 30.
Whether Bradford’s numbers were aided by facing poor defenses will be a focus of debate heading into the game. But Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel seems sold on Bradford.
“This guy’s probably playing as good as anybody I’ve seen play,” Pinkel said. “He doesn’t get flustered. He’s got a lot of help around him. He hardly ever makes a mistake, and that’s a lot because of his offensive line. That’s where it starts.”
Where the teams differ most is on defense. Oklahoma’s finished the regular season ranked 65th in the nation, giving up 359 yards a game. Florida’s is the strongest it has been during Meyer’s tenure, ranking ninth and giving up 279.3 yards. In addition to Bradford, it will most likely have to deal with tailback DeMarco Murray, who left Saturday’s game with a bruised knee but whom Stoops expects to play.
Florida’s secondary would seem to be a match for Bradford’s prowess, its 24 interceptions ranking second.
“They’re a great team,” Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham said. “It’s going to take our best to even beat a team like that.”
