                  You have received a letter from your  pen friend Charles who writes:

… I am having a wonderful time!  We enjoy bathing, driving and swimming. And what about  you? Where are you spending your summer holidays? I hope you’ll write a lot of interesting things.

  Write a letter to your pen friend. In your letter:

       tell him where and how you spend your summer;

       ask 3 questions about his future plans.

Dear Charles,

I'm glad to find out from your letter that you are having a wonderful time. Me too! We are now at my granny's. Her cottage is in the country so we enjoy bathing, cycling and walking. There is a lovely forest nearby, where we pick mushrooms, wild strawberries and raspberries. When I say "we"', I mean the company of my old friends. We were happy to meet each other after the long academic year. There are also two new girls here. They have come to a friend of mine to stay during the summer. They are his cousins and they are twins! But they are a bit different — Anne likes swimming and Sveta likes going the forest. I have seen a deer in the forest - it is the most interesting event of this summer yet. But I'm looking forward to the farewell party!

                  You have received a letter from your  pen friend Spencer who writes:

… You probably have certain difficult writing to me, as you’ve mentioned you study British English at school, and I speak American English (and write, too). At our English lessons we learn a lot, but it is hard. How do you feel about learning English? Do you find it to be a difficult  language?

  Write a letter to your pen friend. In your letter:

       tell how you feel about learning English;

       ask three questions about American English.

Dear Spencer,

Writing to you is not really difficult for me. Though we indeed study British English at school, we also study the differences between it and American English. I find that very interesting and useful. You know, nowadays the knowledge of English is essential for being a well-educated person all over the world. You are lucky to know it from birth! But though some grammar points are hard to understand, I can manage. Our lessons include singing, reading and speaking, which I like. But the textbook can't explain everything. Are there any phonetic differences between the South and the North? Is it true the Americans don't use the Present Perfect often? What do you find the most difficult in your language? Looking forward to your letter,

Your friend, Alex.

                  You have received a letter from your  pen friend Carol who writes:

… I can’t choose whether to become a teacher or an  interpreter. Both professions have their advantages and disadvantages. What would you advise me?

Write a letter to your pen friend. In your letter:

       tell what you think is the best profession for your friend;

       ask 3 questions about her experience.

Dear Carol.

Knowing you as a lively person, I would recommend you to choose a job connected with communication, which is a teacher. This profession has a lot of advantages. First, teachers don't work every day so you will have more rest. Second, you will be able to experiment with the language more than an interpreter. But this profession requires a lot of knowledge and patience. Have you got enough of patience to teach children like your classmates? Do you generally feel at ease with children? Have you ever tried to teach anyone? If yes, and you liked it, then a Teacher-Training Department is waiting for you (if you are not afraid to study for six more years)! But 1 think you can go and speak with your Career teacher you wrote me about last time. He can give you a valuable piece of advice. Your parents also can help you, as they know you better than anybody else.

                  You have received a letter from your  pen friend Daniel who writes:

      … Now  I an a student and I live on the campus alone. Though not alone. I’ve got a roommate, his name is Kevin. He’s great gut!

Write  a letter to your pen friend. In your letter:

       tell whether you want to live with your parents or separately;

       ask 5 questions about your friend’s student life.

Dear Daniel,

I am very glad to get to know you are a student now. It is wonderful you like your university and the faculty. But don't you feel a bit lonely without your parents, especially Dad? I would feel rather lonely without my mother and father. But anyway I would like to try to live on my own. They say, I won't manage. I don't see any reasons why not. I believe that the young should live without parents and try everything themselves. If you live with your parents, it is sometimes tiresome: you have to report where you go, why, and so one. You can invite only a few friends at a time. No loud music, no TV at night. But what if I study better with my telly on, and after midnight? They can't understand this. What worries me most is cooking. How is it organised in your campus? Do you cook or eat at the eatery? How many lessons do you have per day? Do you have to buy all books or is there a library? Is it convenient to share a room with another boy? Can you share books and other things, such as CDs and a telly? Looking forward to your answer,

Your friend, (напишите свое имя).

                    You have received a letter from your  pen friend Edgar who writes:

… my father suggested our visiting Rome or Paris this summer. I think  I’d better go to Paris but I’m not sure. What city would you visit?

      Write a letter to your pen friend. In your letter:

       tell what city you’d visit and why;

       ask 3 questions about your friend’s family

Dear Edgar,

To my mind Paris is better than Rome. Here I completely agree with you.

First of all, Paris is a city where you can feel history everywhere. I wish I could see the Louvre, Versailles and other historical buildings. There are also many museums there. You will see the rooms where Louis XIV and cardinal Richelieu walked. They say Champs d'Elysee are wonderful at night.

Paris is also the city where the events of Notre Dame de Paris take place. Don't you like this musical? I find it is great! You know, it was rusified, and now we can enjoy it in Russian.

Paris also gives you the possibility to try the famous French dishes such as frog's legs. I believe it also can be interesting.

You will also see the famous Eiffel Tower.

And I believe, that Paris is closer to London than Rome, so the flight won't be very tiring. As far as I remember, your mother hates flying, so, it can be an important factor for her. By the way, how's she? And your sister? Have you already redecorated your sitting room? Is your father still against having a dog?

Love,

You have received a letter from your  pen friend Francis who writes:

… I think I’d like to be an interpreter or a translator because I like English and I also do well at our French lessons. My teacher thinks it’ll be good if I take lessons of German, too, so I’ll start learning it this year. We are going to have so much work this year! Do you also have to study much? Do you have any free time to enjoy yourself?

Write a letter to your pen friend. In your letter:

       tell how much  you work and rest;

       ask your friend 3 questions about his school problems.

Dear Francis,

I think you are a workoholic! Three languages! We have only English and Russian, and I sometimes think it is too much. Though, of course, Russian is our native language, sometimes it is not better than English. There are so many rules, and we have to do our best to remember them all (you see, I don't write "understand". Some of them are not for a normal person). "To sweeten the pill" we have Algebra, Geometry, Physics and Chemistry. What I don't understand, why we have all these subjects? But they don't ask us. Still, to have good marks I have to study literally day and night. At night, because for our Computer Science Class and some other classes I have to navigate the I-net, and it is cheaper at night. Computers are cool. I like working on it. Working on the computer is work and play at the same time. Great, isn't it? By the way, we first met there, remember, old man?

So we also have to study hard, and I have very little time to enjoy myself during the weekdays. But the weekend is a little better. Parents usually go to some nice place, like a museum, a park, you see, and take me with them. We dine out, walk and have a lot of fun. How do you rest on weekends? Do you have any problems at school? How many lessons a day do you have? Do you still have free I-net at school?

Yours,

                            You have received a letter from your  pen friend Hatty  who writes:

…I have started to babysit this week and I like it. You know it was the first time I had to manage a baby and I think I did rather well. At least when I was  leaving Andrew, who is only 2, didn’t let me go. His mother was glad and I was happy to get my first pay.

Write a letter to your pen friend. In your letter:

       tell about your experience of babysitting;

       ask your friend 3 questions about the things she and Andrew did together.

Dear Hatty,

It was so brave of you to babysit. When I first had to babysit my little niece (a week ago), I was so afraid and didn't know what to do. She doesn't understand the games I know, doesn't speak and hardly can walk. Though my niece is younger than Andrew (she is only one), your advice can be very helpful. Could you please tell me what games you played with Andrew? How did you have him eat what he was to eat? Were there any problems with clothes? Do you always understand what he utters? Are you going to babysit him all the time? Love,

                            You have received a letter from your  pen friend Sheila who writes:

     …Do you ever go on a diet? I do. Especially in spring, before my summer vacation starts. My mother thinks that I should not do it because it is bad for my health. What do you think about it?

        Do you exercise? I love going to the gym. I want to live a healthy life, but my parents do not understand it. What would you do, if you were me?

      Write back soon.

Love,

Sheila

Dear Sheila,

Thanks for your letter! Unfortunately, I had been preparing for my finals and I couldn't write to you early! I was happy to hear that you are fine, so do I.

In your letter you asked me about diets. To tell you the truth I have never been on a diet because I think diets are bad for health. But I try not to eat many sweets.

I think you must go on a diet if a doctor said you to do so. But I do the morning exercises every day and I go in for sports. It helps a lot to be fit. So if I were you, I'd continue going to the gym.

Well, I got to go now.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Best wishes,

Stacey.

 Dear Steve,

Thank you for your recent letter. I'm awfully sorry for not writing to you earlier, I had so many tasks at school that I had very little free time.

You've written that you are also busy doing a project at school. I've always thought it might be interesting to know about reading habits of people all over the world.

You ask what books my family and I like reading. In general, Russian people are a reading nation and so we are. To be honest, I'm not reading much this year as I'm preparing for my entrance exams, but mostly I choose fantasy books. My mother enjoys reading detective stories while my father prefers historic literature.

     I'm so glad for your sister. Pass my congratulations to her, please. Is her husband British? What does he do? Where do they live?

Write back soon.

Best wishes,

Boris
