Horse riding in environs Almaty

Оn the best spots of the slope, with а fantastic view о n the mountains of Shymbulak, wealthy citizens have built huge mansions and surrounded them by walls and high iron bars as а measure of caution. Тhе poor neighbors in their worn -out wooden cottages seem little disturbed by it. А handful of Kazakh families, оnе of which even lives in а yurt, breed horses.

Оnе can see the half-wild animals in the evening as they соте to the brook in the shadow of the majestic mountain peaks to drink. Тhе many pensioners appear survive оn the clear water of the Butakovka mountain stream and the apples that grow оn the slopes. Repairs of their оnсе charming homes will have to wait until solvent buyers respond to the signs reading “prodam dom” - house for sale.

Оn sunny autumn days, оnе can hardly get enough watching the yellow-red leaves of the apple trees with the red apples that glow as though in competition. The three-thousand-plus peaks behind them are already clad in their first winter snow; the sky is clear-blue.

It is warm enough to climb the trees dressed in shorts in order to shake the apples down. Very brave should might follow the example of cold water therapy adepts who gather here every day to undergo а shock treatment under the waterfall of the Butakovka stream. Ever since the country‘s First Lady, Sara Nazarbayeva, announced that the therapy of the Russian healing expert lvanov (а kind of Russian Kneipp) is extremely healthy and demonstrated it by submitting her own body to this treatment, there has been no end to the influx of health lovers.

Оnе саn reach the waterfall by following the asphalt road towards the east, passing the martially fenced villas of the nouveaux riches till the new sports hotel. Here, оnе must leave one's car, since the smart owner has bought the land beyond as his private property. Оnе can, however, continue оп foot following the brook along the track.

Where the gorge gets narrower, one leaves the path that leads to the Butakovka pass to the left, and in ten minutes оnе reaches the waterfall. Тhе 20 metre high water fall is also very beautiful in winter, when the frozen cascade looks like the castle of а nice princess.

Wanderers in а good condition сап continue the walk across the Kimasarovskiy pass which can be well taken towards Medeu. Those who claim to know say that the walk is easier from Medeu to Butakovka - which could well be true since in that case the road is almost entirely going down. In Butakovka о n е can enjoy the Middle-Asian and Russian cuisines outside the friendly and affordable cafe Bike, situated оп the left side of the road that leads to the waterfall.

Ascention on peak of Khan Tengri from the north

The ascent starts from the base camp "North Inylchek". After the first ascent in 1931 (M.Pogrebezki), climbers have used more than 10 very difficult routes from all four sides.

The beautiful pyramid of Khan Tengri is without doubt the Jewel of the Tien Shan. It is the second highest mountain in this most northerly and remote of the great Asian mountain ranges. Among the local people, the white peaks are known as 'The Mountains of Heaven'.

One of routes up the summit leads from the Base Camp on North Inylchek Glacier. It is a little bit more difficult than the classic route (1931). The ascent on this route lies against the background of the vigorous Northern Wall of Khan-Tengri Peak (H-2500), formed of black granite, blue ice and yellow marble, striking by its dimensions and the play of sunlight and shadows on the mountain wall. The steep ridge, offering comfortable sites for intermediate Camp I (H-4900) and Camp II (H-5500), leads to the snow-covered dome of the shoulder of Chapayev Peak. An easy slope down the wide snow ridge ends in Camp III, usually arranged in a snow cave. The ascent shall be continued by the rock steps of West ridge. There are a few comfortable sites to set camps at altitude 6400 metres . However, this option is not often used. Usually ascents start from Camp III. Fixed ropes will help you almost along the entire route. The months of July and August are the best time for ascending the peak.(pic.4)

A walk to Kolsai lakes

The Kolsai lakes are one of the treasures of the Northern Tien-Shan. These three mountain lakes, set among steep pine-clad slopes, nestle in а spur of the Kungey Аlatau. This is а  wonderful place for camping, hiking, trekking аnd mountain biking.

The nearest village is Saty (270 km from Almaty). The lowest lake, at а height of H-1818), stretches for 1 km. It is accessible by road and there are comfortable guest houses and campsites, The middle Kolsai lake (H-2252), the largest and most beautiful, is 9 km from the first lake.

The highest of the Kolsais is 4 km further and 600 m higher up. After another 6 km you reach the Sary-Вulak Pass (H-3278) on the Kyrgyzstan border, with superb views over the blue Lake Issyk-Kul. The whole 25-km trail can be covered in а day on horseback or three days on foot. The lakes are teeming with trout. (pic.5)

Mountaineer to Talgar peak (H-5017)

Route and difficulties of climbing. The route we offer doesn't include visit to the territory of Almatinskyi nature reserve. Base camp is set up on “Eden glade” on Gorina glacier –  it is one of the tributaries of Korzhenevskogo glacier. We leave the base camp and go to north-west, in direction of junction of the side ridge with the Main ridge. We start going up the side ridge, our way goes on snow-ice gorge. In its lower part it is 150 m wide. It is also crossed by a crack. We cross over the crack on the snowy parts, using ropes. It is necessary to fix up to 100 m of ropes, ice screws are necessary. In the upper part of the gorge there parts of wandering ice, here the gorge narrows to 10 m . We should move on the center of the ridge. (pic.6)

A walk to Turgen gorge

Тhe Turgen Gorge in the Ile Ile-Alatau National Park (82 km from Almaty) is an ideal place to enjoy the beauty of nature. The gorge has hot springs, а trout farm, water-falls and lots of woods.

Rich in coniferous and mixed forests, alpine and sub-alpine meadows, lakes and springs, medicinal herbs and berries, the gorge plunges 44 km to the vast Assy plateau (H-2560).

Long ago caravans from Europe passed through the «Royal Gates» on their way to the East - to China and India . The broad valley stretches east for 60 km.

The Turgen Georg is famous for its seven waterfalls. The Medvezhiy (Bear) Falls drop 30 metres in а beautiful setting amidst overhanging cliffs and green fir trees, while the Bozgul Falls are known for the force of the water, which has worn away an entire tunnel in the l rock. The earth quake-dam-aged cliffs in the gorge still preserve traces of pre-Ice Age vegetation.

Another notable feature of the gorge is the relict Chin-Turgen mossy fir forests which cover the ground and form а  thick carpet of trees. The most popular spot in the Turgen Gorge is Batan, the forest area. Неrе, where three rivers meet, the gorge is at its deepest - 920 metres. The Turgen river flows south west, while the Kishi-Turgen runs south-east.

There is an observatory on the plateau. Ancient burial mounds and rock drawings are dotted along the Assy river. There are quite а few Sacae and Usun graves in the gorge dating back to 500 ВС-300 AD. Holiday homes such as Sinegorye and Tau-Tturgen are located where the hot springs flow into the rapid Turgen river. The Sinegorye, situated 1500 m above sea level in the scenic Mikushino gorge (70 km from Almaty), offers а wide choice of rooms.

The small mountain lakes above the Sinegorye are wonderful for bathing and fishing, while lower down is а trout where уоu can catch your own fish and cook them for supper. (pic.7)

Molodezhnyi and Tuyk-Su glaciers

The Malaya Almatinka Gorge provides stunning panoramic views: Mt. Mokhnatka with its thick cap of fir-trees, the iamond-shaped Кumbel behind it, Mt. Abai in the distance slicing into the bright blue morning sky, and the towering cliffs of the Tuyuk-Su Gates. This region is known for its 46 mountain trails, ranging from simple to extremely challenging.

Between the Malaya and Bolshaya Almatinka Gorges is а huge Alpine meadow named Kok-Jailyau (Green Pasture). This is one of the most popular hikes. The climb to the Kok-Jailyau plateau begins at the Prosveshchenets holiday home just above the confluence of the Malaya Almatinka and Ва tareika rivers (1 km below the Medeu ice rink).

The hike takes 2 - 3 hours, through fir and birch woods а ll the way. The path is just as interesting in winter, when people have great fun sledging and skiing down the gentle 8-km slope. From the plateau you can climb the neighboring Mt. К umbel (H-3200). The path to the К umbel ridge takes you past the enormous cliffs known as the "Three Brothers" (H-3000).

The vast Tuyuk-Su Gates open the way го the granite peak of Tuyuk-Su (H-4200) to the right of the Shymbulak ski resort. This is perhaps the most accessible glacier in the region It's in the centre of а glacier group which forms а horseshoe shape 35 km long and 15 km wide. The glacier shrinks by 10 m ре r year on average and the resulting water forms а lake in summer. When the snow is melting particularly fast, the lake overflows and this са n couse torrents of meltwater.

It was to protect Almaty from meltwater floods that hydro technical facilities were constructed in the Malaya Almatinka and adjoining valleys. The Lejt Talgar Gorge is in- credible with its swift-flowing river, sheer cliffs and Alpine meadows. Trekkers are always overwhelmed by the magnificent scenery with dazzlingly white glaciers.

The rapid Gorelnik and Butakovka rivers create several graceful little waterfalls. There аге wonderful bridleways and footpaths through Medeu to the Кim-Asar Pass (H-2060). The trail runs along а small mountain stream, also named Кim-Asar.

One of the most beautiful spots оп the way is the Butakovka Gorge, а veritable paradies dotted with aspen and birch trees, sunny glades and intoxicatingly-scented wild flowers. Near the Butakovka Pass it self, by the edge of the forest, is а perfect picnic spot surrounded by shady fir trees.

Not far away, in а thicket of wild raspberry bushes to the left of the gorge, you can admire the lovely Butakovka Falls.

Even more arresting is the Lesnoi Pass (H-2650),which gives you an unforgettabIe view of the river valleys. In the Kotyrbulak Gorge you will find the Al т atau ski resort (H-1870), with the Tau-Sa m al health spa below it. (pic.8)

Lake Kaindy

This beautiful lake is almost not known. Probably lakes Kolsajskie located near to it distract on themselves attention of tourists.

Kaindy - young lake, It was formed in XX century, in 1973 during Zhalanash earthquakes, as a result of a mountain collapse. Water has filled a hollow.

Fur-trees which grew at the bottom of a foundation ditch, have appeared flooded, their trunks tower above cold lake, therefore at lake such surprising and unique kind. This lake is, in 26 kilometers, in gorge, the rivers Kaindy, to the east from lakes Kolsay. It is necessary to pass up to the village Zhalanash located to the east from Almaty in 250 kilometers, preliminary, to turn on a guide sign «Saty», "Lake Kolsay" to the right, for 1,5 kilometers in front of the bridge through the river Charyn.

Then, not reaching settlement Saty, approximately, for 700-800 meters, before descent to settlement, in area mazars to turn on the left in a southern direction on a country road which sharply rises upward.

Short hike to Issyk Lake

In the village of Yesik (formerly Issyk), some 50 rilometres to the southeast of Almaty in the direction of Narynkol, a broad, tarmacked road that starts after the bridge across the Yesik River leads southward into the mountains.

Following it, one reaches the picturesque woodlands of the Yesik River valley and the lake of the same name. Yesik means “hot”, and here there are subterranean springs, which not onle slightly warm the lake but also give it its particular milky-blue colour.

The Yesik lake was once called the “Pearl of the Tien-Shan”, until fate took a hand in 1963, when a terrifying mud avalanche thundered down into the valley. What is left of the lake today is being restored – and it seems that the attempt is likely to be successful. (pic.13)
