Why have fossil fuels become the dominant energy source for the modern world?
Сочинение, 04 Августа 2011
Human beings have always relied on energy to grow their food, heat their houses, and to manufacture, power and maintain increasingly sophisticated machinery. It is almost impossible to imagine our lives without it. At the same time, people nowadays often find themselves in centre of great debates about the role of fossil fuels in our life. Fossil fuels transferred from being something that people almost admired to something that scares us. Increase in the utilization of fossil fuels starts from the Industrial revolution, now reaching its critical point.

Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar energy technologies include solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal electricity, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis, which can make considerable contributions to solving some of the most urgent energy problems the world now faces.
What is solar energy used today?
Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute solar energy.

Development of renewable energy is one of the most pressing tasks facing the global energy sector. In the foreseeable future, hydrocarbon fuel will retain its dominant position in the world energy balance, however the share of renewable energy sources will increase year by year. Despite the changing economic situation, depressions and crises, the demand for renewable energy is growing by the year.

Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cells. They generate the energy that our cells need to do their jobs. For example, brain cells need a lot of energy to be able to communicate with each other and also to communicate with parts of the body that may be far away, to do this substances need to be transported along the cells, which needs lots of energy. Muscle fibres also need a lot of energy to help us to move, maintain our posture and lift objects.

Hydropower is renewable energy source that is derived from the energy of moving water. Hydropower is not only used to create electricity but also for some other purposes such as irrigation. People have started using force of the moving water very early, mostly for irrigation purposes, and according to current data irrigation has been used in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia since the 6th millennium BC.
Alternative energy

Alternative energy refers to energy sources that have no undesired consequences such for example fossil fuels or nuclear energy. Alternative energy sources are renewable and are thought to be "free" energy sources. They all have lower carbon emissions, compared to conventional energy sources. These include Biomass Energy, Wind Energy, Solar Energy, Geothermal Energy, Hydroelectric Energy sources.
Energy Supply, World

Energy Supply, World, combined resources by which the nations of the world attempt to meet their energy needs. Energy is the basis of industrial civilization; without energy, modern life would cease to exist. During the 1970s the world began a painful adjustment to the vulnerability of energy supplies. In the long run, conserving energy resources may provide the time needed to develop new sources of energy, such as hydrogen fuel cells, or to further develop alternative energy sources, such as solar energy and wind energy.
